PE

Physical Education is a vital part of the curriculum at Filey Academy, supporting students’ physical health, mental well-being, and personal development. From Year 7 onwards, pupils are introduced to a wide range of sports and activities that promote participation, enjoyment, and personal growth. Our aim is to inspire every student to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and understand its benefits beyond the classroom.

In Key Stage 3, students follow a structured learning journey. In Year 7, pupils begin with discovery-based learning, encouraging curiosity and exploration through varied physical activities. In Year 8, they move into developmental learning, building on foundational skills and deepening their understanding of techniques and tactics. By Year 9, students engage in applied learning, using their knowledge in more complex, real-world contexts that promote independence and problem-solving. This progression not only strengthens subject knowledge but also fosters transferable skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience—benefiting students well beyond the classroom.

Students participate in a broad selection of sports including football, netball, rugby, basketball, athletics,
gymnastics, badminton, table tennis, cricket, rounders, and fitness training. Lessons are designed to build core physical skills, improve tactical awareness, and promote teamwork. Pupils also learn about the principles of training and how to enhance their own performance through structured practice and reflection.

Our PE programme places a strong emphasis on character development. Students are encouraged to take
on leadership roles such as team captain, coach, or official, helping them build confidence, communication skills, and resilience. Inter-tutor competitions and extracurricular clubs provide further opportunities for pupils to compete, collaborate, and celebrate their achievements in a supportive and inclusive environment.

At Key Stage 4, students have the opportunity to study Cambridge National in Sports Studies. This vocational qualification offers a deeper understanding of sport through topics such as contemporary issues in sport, sports leadership, principles of training, and practical performance. The course combines theoretical and practical elements, preparing students for further education or careers in sport, fitness, and health.

Overall, Physical Education at Filey Academy is about more than just playing games. It’s about building character, confidence, and a commitment to healthy living. Whether through competitive sport, recreational fitness, or leadership opportunities, we provide every student with the chance to thrive and enjoy the lifelong benefits of being active.
